A first look at "Call of Duty: Black Ops" revealed a mission titled "WMD," which takes place during the Cold War in the Ural Mountains. New details indicate that Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC owners won't be the only ones able to tour Treyarch's history lesson, though. The Wii has been outed as a "Black Ops" platform too.
Nintendo's console will be among the systems getting the next Call of Duty title on November 9, according to USA Today. A Wii edition doesn't come as a huge surprise, given that Treyarch's last go at the franchise, "Call of Duty: World at War," shipped for the white box as well, but the focus on "Black Ops" since it was announced has been firmly placed on its other incarnations.
The news will definitely be good for the Wii, which hasn't had an overabundance of high-profile third-party titles in recent years. Treyarch's decision to maintain their CoD presence on the system won't cause any major shakeups. It should, however, be seen as a vote of confidence amid less enthusiastic moves by other companies.
Were you surprised to hear that "Black Ops" will be available on the Wii? Do you think Treyarch and Activision made the right call? Sound off in the comment section below.
Those who have enjoyed the Call of Duty franchise's previous outings on Nintendo platforms will surely be disappointed to learn of retail outlet GameStop's omission of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops' Wii incarnation on its pre-order listing.
Activision has yet to officially announce which systems will carry the title, so it's all speculation at this point. But based on this new development, however, it's looking more likely that Black Ops will either unfortunately see a delayed Wii release or possibly none at all.
Treyarch, the developers of this year's entry, have been Wii-friendly for past Call of Duty games, delivering versions of their previous entries Call of Duty 3 and World at War. The studio also ported Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to Wii in November 2009, two years after the game was originally released on PC and HD consoles. The Wii lacks a version of Modern Warfare 2.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is on course for a scheduled release date in November 2010 and sources have revealed that it will be set between World War II and the present day.
The Treyarch-developed shooter is rumoured to take gamers across the planet, including missions set in Cuba and South America, according to Call of Duty website experts Tek9, who have talked to 'undisclosed sources at Activision'.
Players will also reportedly get the chance to play as a member of the Special Air Service (SAS) during a close combat mission in the Iranian embassy siege during the 1980's.
The game is also hinted to feature the popular “zombie mode”, in which players are confronted with waves of zombies, an extra that was made popular by Treyarch-developed Call of Duty:World at War.
PC gamers will be given the additional bonus of dedicated servers according to the report, to alleviate some of the problems gamers experienced with previous titles.
Activision have refused to confirm or deny any of the rumours so far.
So a big change from the original rumours of a Vietnam game.
Activision has announced Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed studio led by former Visceral Games executives Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, will develop a new Call of Duty title that will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre."
The publisher also confirmed it will release another Call of Duty title in 2011, but it's unclear as of now if this is the same title Sledgehammer is currently developing. This leaves the door open for another studio, possibly Infinity Ward, to develop the 2011 title. We've asked Activision for clarification.
The company also confirmed Treyarch is handling development on the Call of Duty title to be released this fall. Meanwhile, Infinity Ward is still set to develop and release the first two downloadable map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise," stated Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. "In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."
Activision also says it's looking to expand the franchise with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business. This includes looking at "high-margin digital online content" and taking the series to "new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."
The company has had "discussions with a select number of partners" to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing online multiplayer regions.
It’s been rumoured for over a year now and with information slowly pouring out from Treyarch all week it seems the CoD series may once again be heading back in time, only not as far back as World War 2.
Call of Duty 7 is expected to take place in the 1960’s and will focus on the Vietnam conflict, and as previous games in the series will take it’s inspiration heavily from movies such as Platoon and Apocalypse Now. What’s not known is how sensitively Treyarch will approach this controversial conflict, their last foray to the CoD universe was far more violent than previous entries and even opened with a torture scene of US troops.
Details are scarce at the moment, but what is known for definite is the release date, November this year, with Activision clearly hoping that the success of CoD 7 will match their phenomenal dominance over the Christmas period of 2009 with Modern Warfare 2.
However, Treyarch do have something of an obstacle to overcome after they faced criticism for their last game’s return to fictional real world wars after Modern Warfare’s updated outing. We’ll have to wait and see if the developer can match Infinity Ward’s prowess and see if people are as forgiving about a game set in Vietnam as they where with World War 2.
